The CSMOIM Launches the English Version of Its ''Prevention of Psychological & Sexual Harassment'' Training Course

Quebec City, February 12, 2025 – The Human Resources Sectorial Committee of the Maritime Industry (CSMOIM) is proud to announce the launch of the English version of its Prevention of Psychological & Sexual Harassment training course, tailored to the realities of maritime industry personnel. Already available in French, the training is now offered in English to reach more workers and companies, in response to a demand widely expressed by the industry.

A Major Issue for the Maritime Workforce

Harassment in the workplace can have major consequences on the retention and attractiveness of the workforce: increased staff turnover, impacts on the mental and physical health of workers, reduced motivation and productivity... To address these issues, the CSMOIM wants to raise awareness and equip employers and their teams to promote healthy and safe work environments.

A Hands-On Training Tailored to the Maritime Sector

Developed in collaboration with the Continuing Education Department of the Institut maritime du Québec (IMQ), and with the financial support of the Quebec government, the Commission des normes, de l'équité, de la santé et de la sécurité du travail (CNESST) via its Program to Combat Psychological or Sexual Harassment in the Workplace, the Seafarers' International Union of Canada (SIUC) and the Canadian Merchant Service Guild (CMSG), the training addresses essential themes such as reflecting on values and behaviours in the workplace and defining harassment. It also focuses on the myths and realities surrounding harassment, and the responsibilities of employers and employees. The course looks at how to create a respectful and inclusive work environment too, and what to do as a victim, a witness or an alleged offender. Also covering the legal and legislative framework in Quebec and Canada, the training ultimately provides a practical toolbox to better prevent and intervene in situations of harassment.

''By raising awareness among their teams, maritime organizations can actively contribute to preventing harassment and improving working climates. Every initiative counts in building a corporate culture that promotes employee well-being and safety.'' – Manou Bernard, Executive Director, CSMOIM

An Entirely Remote Training

With a duration of approximately 3 hours, the Prevention of Psychological & Sexual Harassment training enables workers and employers to complete the course at their own pace for up to 60 days, entirely by distance learning, with content adapted to the realities of maritime industry personnel.

The CSMOIM invites companies and their personnel, both on board and on land, to register: https://www.csmoim.qc.ca/fr/formulaires/psychological-sexual-harassment-registration
