''Green Transition'' Theme Day: The Maritime Industry Rallies to Develop Skills for the Green Transition

Quebec City, November 28, 2024—On November 20, the Comité sectoriel de main-d'oeuvre de l'industrie maritime (CSMOIM) organized, with the support of the St. Lawrence Economic Development Council (SODES) and with the financial support of the Quebec government, the Thematic Day on Skills Development Issues Related to the Green Transition in the Maritime Sector

The day, which brought together more than 50 representatives from maritime companies (terminal managers, shipowners/operators, port authorities, maritime services and others), government departments, community and union organizations, and educational institutions, featured discussions on themes related to the development of maritime skills in connection with the green transition, including:

  • The Maritime Industry Decarbonization Plan and its impact on businesses and the workforce;
  • Inspiring models of companies that have implemented concrete initiatives;
  • Innovative practices in the tourism industry that can be adapted to the maritime sector;
  • Academic realities and the match between training and the evolving needs of businesses;
  • Programs and initiatives to support the green transition and skills development.

By bringing together a variety of perspectives, the event offered participants concrete tools for adapting to the imperatives of the green transition, while strengthening their competitiveness and preparing their teams for the challenges of today and tomorrow. The discussions also highlighted the need for greater collaboration between stakeholders in the sector, and encouraged collective reflection on priorities for action to align training programs with the needs and realities of the job market.

''The CSMOIM is proud to bring together maritime industry partners to reflect together and propose collective actions to support the development of skills towards a greener culture. Sharing expertise and vision towards common goals and involving the entire value chain is the key to getting there.'' Manou Bernard, Managing Director, CSMOIM
